For many parents, video games are often seen as a distraction — something that takes time away from school, responsibilities, or real-life activities. This concern is understandable. However, modern research suggests that this view may no longer reflect reality. When used in moderation, video games and esports can offer meaningful cognitive, social, and even professional benefits.

Scientific studies have shown that gaming can positively impact how the brain functions. A study by the National Institutes of Health (2022) involving nearly 2,000 children found that those who played video games regularly performed better on tasks related to memory and impulse control, while also showing increased brain activity in areas linked to attention and cognitive processing. Other research (2022) has also demonstrated improvements in attention, visual processing, and decision-making speed. In some cases, brain imaging has even revealed that gaming can strengthen regions associated with learning and memory.

Beyond cognitive development, video games also help build real-world skills. Many modern games require players to think strategically, adapt quickly, and solve complex problems under pressure. In competitive environments, especially esports, players develop critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and confidence. These are not just “gaming skills” - they are essential abilities for success in today’s digital and professional world.

Esports, the video games competitive environments, shares many similarities with traditional sports. Players must train consistently, work within teams, handle pressure, and continuously improve their performance. Research shows that this environment can foster discipline, leadership, and resilience. Just like football or basketball, esports teaches young people how to collaborate, compete, and grow through both success and failure.

It is also important to understand the scale of the gaming industry today. Video games are no longer a niche hobby. Over 3.4 billion people around the world play games, and the industry now generates more revenue than film and music combined. This growth has created entirely new career paths, from professional players and content creators to roles in marketing, technology, and event management. For young people in Nigeria, this represents a growing digital opportunity that goes far beyond entertainment.

Of course, balance remains essential. Like any activity, excessive gaming can have negative effects. But when approached responsibly - with structured time, the right type of games, and a healthy lifestyle - gaming can be a positive and productive part of a young person’s life.

Video games are not simply a way to pass time. They are a reflection of how the world is changing. For today’s generation, gaming is a space for learning, creativity, competition, and connection. Rather than viewing it only as a distraction, it may be more accurate to see it as a tool - one that, when guided properly, can help unlock new skills, new opportunities, and a new future.
